Direct Marketing International: Business facing legal threat

UK business is failing to ensure that web sites are accessible to disabled users which is leading to not only a loss of new business but opening up a threat of potential legal action.

These conclusions are contained in a report by The Usability Company - a UK consultancy - which was produced in collaboration with the Digital Media Access Group. Catriona Campbell, the report's co-author and CEO of the consultancy commented:

"Failing to address the needs of more than one million people in the UK means that businesses are missing out on a sizeable revenue stream. In addition to this, companies should consider the potential legal implications of denying access to these groups."

Alan Mason of MacRoberts solicitors supported this and added: "It is not going to be long before we see a number of test cases where disabled people or those representing them such as charities, take large e-mailers to court for failing to consider their right of accessibility."

The launch of the UK report co-incided with a move by the US Federal Government to impose penalties on government-run sites which denied equality of access for all users.
