Foviance offers FREE usability testing to mark World Usability Day November 3 2005
Sign up to have your site tested free of charge
To mark World Usability Day on the 3rd of November, Foviance is running a marathon of short testing sessions to raise awareness of the practice and benefits of usability, and to give people a little taster of usability testing.
We're offering you the chance to have your website tested for free in our specially designed lab environment. Each testing session will be approx 15 mins long, including a couple of minutes of prep with the consultant before the testing and feedback afterwards.
If you'd like to participate in our marathon, please send us an e-mail with the url the site you want to test and two tasks that you want the user to complete. Depending on the complexity of the task(s) and usability of the site we may get more than one task done. An example of a URL & task is as follows:
URL http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/...-4473222
Task I want to find out how easy it is to find & buy a romance book.
You'll be able to observe the testing from the viewing room where another usability expert can talk you through the process and give advice on the spot.
Accessibility Training Course May 18 2005
The Usability Company's one-day Accessibility Training Course covers the most important issues surrounding accessibility on the Internet and Intranet. The course guides the attendees in negotiating the complex and changing area of accessibility. There have been several scare stories of companies being sued for lack of accessibility on their sites and the WAI guidelines have often been criticised for being overly complex and difficult to implement. Combined with the lack of practical experience and knowledge in this emerging arena, there is much confusion about whether to implement accessibility guidelines, which ones to implement and how to do this on a practical level. To register for the course online please or email for further information.

BBC Usability and Accessibility Guidelines
May 14 2004
Catriona gave a talk to BBC Producers, web developers and others within the CBBC on May 14th. The discussion was based on Accessibility and Usability Guidelines. Catriona introduced the session giving a summary of these areas, with examples from the web. In a real live evaluation she asked a member of the audience to complete a task on two very different sites designed for use by children. The first was the Tweenies site - a Channel 4 web site, this site was impossible to find from a search engine because it has so many broken links to it, and once there, the user found themselves being spat out to the Channel 4 site -an example of an unusable site. The second site was the Habbo Hotel, a chat room for 13 years old up, which is the least accessible site out there for kids. Catriona concluded that real world hotels have to be accessible for guests, why should this online Hotel not be!!
Other speakers at the event included the Head of HCI research and development for the BBC, who discussed usability and how testing is carried out with children at the BBC.
